Keynote Speech

Jeroen van Merriënboer "How Learning-Analytics Based Instructional Design Can Help to Improve the Quality of Higher Education"

Moderator: Elena Drugova (HSE University)

Instructional Design (ID) deals with the application of instructional methods that lead to effective, efficient, and enjoyable learning experiences. Chosen methods take desired learning goals and given conditions into account when developing educational programs (e.g., courses, learning trajectories, curricula). Meta-analyses show that in higher education, the use of ID-models such as four-component instructional design (4C/ID) has a strong positive effect on students’ learning outcomes (Costa et al., 2021; Frèrejean et al., 2019). Yet, after initial development, further improvement of educational programs is desirable through a process of continuous evaluation and adaptation. Traditional evaluation measures, such as learning outcomes, student evaluations, and expert appraisals are not very helpful in this respect because they do not directly show whether applied methods show intended effects on students’ learning processes. Fortunately, the increasing use of task-centred and blended learning approaches in higher education yields a wealth of online student data that can provide more insight into the actual impact of selected instructional methods on students’ learning (e.g., interactions with contents, peers, teachers). In this presentation, I will explain and illustrate how learning analytics can help to identify indicators-of-improvement and support a process of continuous evaluation and adaptation of educational programs to increase the quality of higher education.

Bjørn Stensaker "Improving quality of education: Managing complexity"

Moderator: Sergey Malinovskiy (HSE University)

Many universities around the world are working hard to develop the quality of the educational offerings. Developing a coherent strategy for quality development at institutional level is nevertheless a challenge for the university leadership as it implies the coming together of program designs, pedagogical innovations, digital learning environments, quality assurance, etc. The presentation identifies key challenges for aligning the work on quality improvement, and discusses strategic options enabling universities to manage the identified complexities".

Round table "Prospects for the Development of Pedagogical Design in Russian Higher Education as a Resource for Improving the Quality of Education"

Pedagogical design named by Inside Higher Ed magazine. "The most in-demand direction in education in 2020" due to the massive transition to online and blended learning during the pandemic. The Educause think tank in the Horizon Report for 2021 on the future of education points to the need for continued investment in the development of teaching staff, including in pedagogical design skills, so that the competencies of teachers keep up with current technological advances. At the same time, today pedagogical design is little integrated into the realities of Russian higher education, although the demand for it is more and more realized and grows every day in various fields. In this regard, it is relevant to discuss the following issues:

- How are Russian universities already implementing pedagogical design practices, increasing the competence of teachers, adapting its approaches and methods to the regulatory environment of Russian higher education?

- What solutions from international experience in the development of pedagogical design at universities can be useful in the field of Russian higher education?

- What is the situation with research in the field of pedagogical design in Russia and in the world, how can such research improve the quality of educational results?

- How can the development of educational analytics be used in the practice of pedagogical design in Russian universities to improve the quality of education?

"Cases of Russian Universities": Presentation of the Third Volume

Book series "Cases of Russian Universities" is published by IoE master programme "Management of Education". Third Volume collects 11 unique cases described and developed by students of the programme. These cases are a result of the study of real managerial situations in universities. These cases are used not only in the educational process, but also for the development of managerial decisions by universities.

The presentation will be devoted to describing the technology for creating and including cases in the educational process of the master programme and also cover the most interesting issues that were raised in this volume. Participants will be invited to participate in a Q&A session with the presenters. The first copies of the book, which are expected to be released in early November, will be sent to the authors of the best questions of the Q&A.

Round table "Using the Results of Student Assessment of Teaching and Other Feedback Tools in Quality Management of Education During a Pandemic"

The sudden and forced transition of the educational process at universities to an online format has given rise to many questions. Perhaps, the key of them sounds something like this: did the universities, which found themselves in extraordinary conditions, manage to preserve the quality of education and, accordingly, the level of training of students. A local feedback deficit has arisen.

Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) is one of the most popular tools for obtaining feedback on the educational process from students. Of course, satisfaction with education is not identical to its quality, and the very measurement of satisfaction by the survey method can be accompanied by a number of biases. However, the relative ease of implementation, as well as the understanding of the value of taking into account student opinions, contribute to the further development and dissemination of this tool, the demand for which has increased during the period of turbulence associated with coronavirus restrictions in education.

Within the framework of the round table, it is planned to discuss the practice of adapting the SET system to the period of distance and mixed learning formats, the peculiarities of using the results of SET in the management of the educational process, as well as the history of the development of SET in foreign universities.

Key issues for discussion:

  • How does the SET system at the HSE University work?
  • How does SET change during and after a pandemic?
  • What are the development trends of SET in foreign universities?
  • How is the process of institutionalization of SET at TSU going (on the example of the TSU Undergraduate Core program)?
